KAMBO FOR ALL PEOPLE WHO DESIRE TO AWAKEN THEIR FULLEST POTENTIAL, STRENGTHEN THEIR SPIRIT AND CREATE HARMONY IN MIND & BODY.
Kambo comes from the secretion of the Phyllomedusa bicolor, a sacred frog native to the Amazon rainforest. These frogs are revered as guardians of the jungle. With no natural predators and an abundance throughout the Amazon, they carry an innate resilience and power that has been honored for generations. Many regions of the rainforest are now protected to ensure the survival of these extraordinary beings.
For centuries, Amazonian tribes have used Kambo as “hunting magic.” Warriors would apply it before a hunt to heighten their senses, sharpen awareness, and strengthen stamina. Beyond physical performance, Kambo was also a spiritual medicine, used to clear panema the dense energies, emotional heaviness, or streaks of misfortune that cloud clarity and vitality. Traditionally, it has been relied upon to support the body in fighting infections, malaria, fever, and even snake bites.
What makes Kambo so unique is its biochemical richness. The secretion contains a complex blend of bioactive peptides and neuropeptides, each with profound effects on human physiology.
These peptides are easily absorbed by the body, working synergistically to:
Italian pharmacologist and two-time Nobel Prize nominee Vittorio Erspamer, who first studied Kambo in a laboratory setting, called it “a fantastic chemical cocktail with potential medical applications, unequaled by any other amphibian.”Erspamer is also known for discovering serotonin and identifying over 60 new bioactive compounds, which highlights the significance of his recognition of Kambo’s potential.
Today, many are drawn to Kambo as a tool for deep purification and optimization clearing the physical, emotional, and energetic burdens that weigh us down. Whether one seeks to enhance vitality, strengthen the body, or embark on a spiritual reset, Kambo continues to be a bridge between ancient wisdom and modern healing.
Kambo, the secretion of the Phyllomedusa bicolor tree frog, has been studied by scientists since the 1970s. Researchers became interested in this secretion because of its unique collection of bioactive peptides—small protein-like molecules that can interact with the human body in powerful ways. Unlike most substances used in traditional medicine, Kambo contains a cocktail of peptides that directly engage with receptors in the brain, the gut, the vascular system, and even the immune system. This makes it one of the most pharmacologically complex substances found in nature.
Some of the most studied peptides include dermorphins and deltorphins, which are potent opioid-like peptides far stronger than morphine but without the same addictive potential. These molecules interact with the body’s pain-regulation systems, which is why Kambo has drawn scientific attention for its potential as a pain reliever. Other peptides, like phyllomedusin and phyllokinin, affect smooth muscles and blood vessels, leading to the flushing, sweating, and increased circulation commonly experienced during a Kambo ceremony. Another peptide, sauvagine, influences the adrenal cortex and corticotropin-releasing factor pathways, which play a role in stress regulation.
Research has also pointed to Kambo’s antimicrobial and antifungal properties. Several of the peptides found in the frog secretion have been shown in laboratory studies to inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, viruses, and even cancer cells. This has led pharmaceutical companies to explore these molecules for potential drug development, though so far, none have made it into approved medications. Still, the scientific community continues to be intrigued by Kambo’s diverse chemical makeup and what it reveals about the healing intelligence of nature.
Since the late 20th century, studies have explored Kambo’s potential in addressing conditions such as chronic pain, depression, vascular issues, and immune dysregulation. One of the most remarkable aspects of the peptides is their ability to cross the blood-brain barrier—a natural protective shield that normally prevents most substances from entering the brain. Because these peptides can cross into the central nervous system, they have the capacity to influence mood, memory, and emotional regulation, which helps explain why many people report shifts in depression, anxiety, or trauma symptoms after working with Kambo.
It’s important to note that while the scientific research is promising, most of it has been conducted in laboratories, not in large-scale human clinical trials. This means that while Kambo’s peptides show great potential, they have not yet been developed into standardized medicines or approved treatments. The evidence we have today comes from laboratory studies, early pharmacological research, and thousands of anecdotal reports from traditional and modern Kambo use. What this tells us is that Kambo is worthy of deep respect: it is powerful, mysterious, and still largely being discovered by science.
For those who feel called to this medicine, it can be reassuring to know that modern research validates much of what Indigenous communities of the Amazon have always known—that Kambo is a potent ally for the body and spirit. While it should never replace medical care, the science shows that the frog secretion contains compounds unlike anything else in nature, offering us a window into both healing potential and the vast intelligence of the natural world.
the bioactive peptides found in kambo
The secretion of the Phyllomedusa bicolor frog contains a remarkable blend of bioactive peptides and neuropeptides, each carrying unique properties that interact with the human body at a cellular level. These peptides are easily absorbed and begin working almost immediately, supporting the body’s natural ability to heal, cleanse, and restore balance.
Scientists have described Kambo as one of the most complex natural compounds found in the animal kingdom. Vittorio Erspamer, the pharmacologist who first studied Kambo in a laboratory setting, called it “a fantastic chemical cocktail with potential medical applications, unequaled by any other amphibian.”
A tachykinin peptide that causes strong contraction of the intestines and smooth muscles. This action is what stimulates the purge, helping release toxins, stagnant energy, and waste from the body. It also dilates blood vessels, improving circulation.
Both dilate blood vessels and increase vascular permeability, allowing beneficial compounds to move quickly through the body. They also lower blood pressure and support healthy circulation.
These peptides regulate the digestive system, stimulate smooth muscle, and support gallbladder and pancreatic function. They also lower blood pressure, reduce stress, and have pain-relieving effects
Extremely potent natural opioids that bind to opioid receptors in the brain, providing strong analgesic (pain relief) and mood-elevating effects. They are significantly more powerful than morphine but without its addictive properties.
Influences the adrenal glands and the uptake of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), which is central to cellular energy. This peptide helps regulate mood, stress response, and overall vitality.
A family of antimicrobial peptides with potent effects against bacteria, viruses, fungi, and even tumor cells in some studies. They are being researched for their possible role in fighting antibiotic-resistant infections.
Promote vasodilation (expansion of blood vessels), reduce blood pressure, and enhance circulation. They also contribute to the anti-inflammatory effects of Kambo.
Stimulate gastric secretions, regulate smooth muscle contraction, and influence satiety (the feeling of fullness). They support digestive processes and may reduce anxiety.
They stimulate gastric, bile, pancreatic secretions, and specific smooth muscles. They could be used in the paralytic ileus and as a diagnostic medium in pancreatic dysfunction.
A group of peptides with neurological effects. They are thought to influence mood, memory, and cognitive processes, and are being studied for their therapeutic potential in neurological disorders.
kambo also provides energetic support with the following:
kambo may be specially beneficial for the following physical conditions:
Kambo is often described as a reset. A way of bringing the body, mind, and spirit back into harmony. In our modern world, stress, toxins, and unresolved emotional patterns accumulate and create imbalance. Kambo offers a profound clearing that helps release what no longer serves and creates space for clarity, vitality, and alignment.
On a physical level, the peptides in Kambo strengthen the immune system, cleanse the liver and intestines, regulate blood pressure, and support the nervous system. Many people notice an increase in energy, improved focus, and a stronger connection to their body’s natural rhythms after a session.
On a mental and emotional level, Kambo helps quiet the noise of the mind, release heaviness, and bring a renewed sense of presence. Indigenous traditions have long used it to clear panema the emotional and energetic blockages that weigh us down allowing space for lightness and flow.
On a spiritual level, Kambo opens a doorway to deeper self-awareness and connection. By purging toxins and stagnant energy, the spirit feels more aligned and receptive, making it easier to walk forward with clarity, intention, and strength.
Kambo is not about adding more to your life, but about clearing what has been clouding your natural balance. In this recalibration, the mind becomes sharper, the body more resilient, and the spirit freer to guide your path.
what happens during &
after a kambo ceremony?
Each Kambo ceremony with me lasts about 2 hours and is held with deep care and reverence. This is some of the most sacred work I offer, and my intention is always to create a space where you feel safe, supported, and deeply held. I bring my trauma-informed training to every ceremony, which means your body and nervous system are honored throughout the process. My role is to guide you with compassion so you can surrender into the experience knowing that your well-being comes first.
The Process
Kambo is applied through small blister points on the skin called “gates.” These gates are created gently with a natural incense stick, only opening the very top layer of your skin, similar to what it looks like if you pop a small blister. For a basic session, 3 to 5 gates are opened. Once the gates are ready, you’ll drink about ¾ liter of water, and then the Kambo dots are applied.
Within minutes, you’ll begin to feel the effects. They come on quickly but last only about 20 to 25 minutes. You may feel a wave of warmth through your body, your heart rate increase slightly, a throbbing sensation in your head or ears, or tingling in your lips and tongue. As the medicine deepens, you may feel lightheaded, weak, or nauseous, with flu-like sensations such as body aches or fatigue. For some, this includes purging, but it is important to know that purging is not required to receive the benefits of Kambo. The peptides begin working in your system as soon as the medicine touches your skin.
If purging happens, it is your body’s natural response to the medicine. After drinking water, what comes up is usually a mix of water and bile. While some traditions view this as the release of toxins, the scientific truth is that your liver already handles detoxification every day. The purge is simply the body’s emetic response, and many people find it to be a powerful release both physically and emotionally.
After the Ceremony
Once the active process subsides, the flu-like symptoms fade and you may find yourself in a calm, peaceful, and even blissful state. Most people regain their strength within 30 to 45 minutes, though for some it may take a little longer. The beauty of Kambo is that its benefits often unfold over time. Many people notice feeling clearer, lighter, and more energized the next day, with effects that can last for days or even weeks afterward.
For those navigating conditions like autoimmune illness, Lyme disease, or mold toxicity, there is a possibility of experiencing a Herxheimer reaction where symptoms temporarily intensify before improving. If this happens, you will not be left to navigate it alone. I offer ongoing support for up to 30 days after your ceremony to ensure that you feel guided and cared for as your body continues its healing process.
The Herxheimer response is a natural bodily process triggered by a greater prevalence of endotoxins. These substances are released when harmful microorganisms and bacteria are destroyed or die off. As damaging bacteria are destroyed, they release previously contained endotoxins into the bloodstream. This allows the toxins to be transported to the appropriate system and subsequently expelled from the body.
However, rapid destruction of bacteria can cause an influx of endotoxins resulting in greater toxicity. When this occurs, the immune system responds by triggering an acute immune response resulting in inflammation that may be experienced throughout the body. This can cause worsening of current symptoms and the development of new symptoms.
The Herxheimer reaction is frequently seen during antibiotic treatments because antibiotics destroy numerous microorganisms and bacteria. Although the Herxheimer reaction is typically non-lethal, it does frequently cause temporary pain, discomfort, and worsening of symptoms. Symptom severity is often indicative of the level of inflammation triggered by the immune system.
Common symptoms that develop or worsen due to a Herxheimer response include:
Typically, symptoms develop within a couple of hours to several days after treatment. However, depending on the location of the bacteria, symptoms may develop later.
Because of the sudden worsening of symptoms, it is common for patients to feel that the severity of their condition has increased due to the treatment. However, even though treatment causes a temporary increase in symptom intensity due to greater release of toxins the condition ultimately improves. The body responding in this way usually means that the treatment is actually working effectively.
A Herxheimer reaction can last for a week or upwards of multiple months. The duration of the reaction is dependent on individual patient factors. Perhaps the greatest determinant of reaction length is what condition is being treated and its status.*

What Is Hapé?
Hapé (pronounced ha-peh) is a sacred tobacco snuff made from finely ground medicinal plants, traditionally prepared and blessed by indigenous tribes of the Amazon. It is blown gently into the nostrils with intention and prayer. This medicine helps to clear the mind, ground the body, and open energetic pathways. Many experience a sense of calm, alignment, and connection to spirit. During a Kambo ceremony, Hapé is often offered to bring you into presence, quiet the mental chatter, and prepare your body and spirit to receive Kambo.
What Is Sananga?
Sananga is a powerful plant medicine made from the roots and bark of an Amazonian shrub. It is administered as eye drops and is known for its intense yet brief physical sensation. Beyond its physical benefits of supporting vision and clearing the eyes, Sananga is revered for its ability to open spiritual sight, release energetic blockages, and bring clarity on emotional, mental, and soul levels. In Kambo ceremonies, Sananga can be offered before or after Kambo to clear energy, sharpen focus, and support deeper insight.
How They Are Used In Kambo Ceremonies
Both Hapé and Sananga are considered sacred allies that work in harmony with Kambo. They are not required, but many people choose to receive them as part of the ceremony. Hapé helps ground and center you before the intensity of Kambo, while Sananga supports cleansing and vision after the purge, leaving you with a greater sense of clarity and openness. Together, they create balance, support your nervous system, and help you receive the full medicine of Kambo.

No. Kambo is not psychedelic. It is considered an ‘ordeal medicine’ that works on the physical body and, by doing so, provides access to more profound healing on a mental, emotional, and spiritual level.
The following is a list of contraindications for Kambo:
Yes, it is legal in the U.S. and most other countries. As long as we continue to practice responsible Kambo facilitation, it will remain legal. This is another reason to seek out trained practitioners with in-person experience.
Tribal Detox practitioners such as myself use ethically and humanely sourced Kambo from a known tribe that has an established relationship with the founders of Tribal Detox. The frogs may sometimes be stressed, but they are not harmed and are not held in captivity for ‘milking.’ They are treated with respect and reverence by the tribe and are always released back into the jungle. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the Phyllomedusa Bicolor frog in their endangered species database’s ‘Least Concerned’ category. These frogs are sacred and protected within the regions of our trusted sources.
Kambo is safe when it is facilitated by a skilled and trained practitioner. Nowadays, many Kambo training programs are offered online and worldwide, so it’s crucial to seek out a practitioner who has extensive in-person training and understands the science and mechanics of Kambo to ensure a safe environment. Working with someone who has physically met the frog is good, but this doesn’t necessarily mean they facilitate safely and responsibly. What’s most important is to work with a practitioner committed to putting your safety first–someone who deeply understands how the peptides in kambo work with the body.
Quite a few studies have been done on Kambo since the first samples were brought into the U.S. by the award-winning investigative journalist Peter Gorman and anthropologist Katharine Milton.
Here are a few studies:
Antitumor and Angiostatic Activities of the Antimicrobial Peptide Dermaseptin B2
Medusins: A new class of antimicrobial peptides from the skin secretions of phyllomedusine frogs
Set a clear intention and come into your ceremony with an open mind and heart. You must fast for 7 hours before sitting with Kambo, so it’s essential to hydrate yourself well the day before. Upon booking your ceremony date, more details on preparation will be provided.
Hapé is a sacred shamanic snuff used by multiple tribes of the Amazon for hundreds and possibly thousands of years. Tobacco is used as the base for most rapés because of its protective qualities. In the Amazon, tobacco is revered as a protector and is used to clear out dense energies and dark entities. The ashes of medicinal plants and trees are added to create different Hapé blends, each offering different benefits and qualities. Hapé holds a powerful grounding quality, and depending on the blend, it can also support alertness, focus, and connection to spirit by opening the third eye or crown chakra. Hapé is administered by blowing it into the nostrils via a kuripé for self-administration or a tepi if it’s administered by someone else.
These are very potent eye drops that enhance vision (in the 3D world and spiritual dimensions,) increase energy, provide pain relief, and, with regular use, may permanently improve one’s vision. Sananga is commonly offered before a Kambo session because it can assist you in getting out of your head and back into your body. It also provides a path to entering a meditative state, leading you to feel more calm and relaxed, releasing all anxiety and worries. A typical Sananga experience lasts 10-15 minutes and will leave you feeling ready for Kambo.
